I remember sitting in 5th grade in Mrs. Sizemore’s class at Harmony Elementary.

First time taking a “real” standardized test.

So I start the test.
First five questions? Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I’m rockin that thing like the Foo Fighters.

Then I look down at my bubble sheet, and suddenly… my brain feels disconnected.

The test says Question 6.
My bubble sheet says…Question 1 again.

I’m like “Why are we hitting the refresh button right now??”

So I sit there.
Stressing.
Re-checking.
Staring at it like it’s gonna fix itself.

For a solid 6–7 minutes (before that was a thing).

Finally, I raise my hand. Mrs. Sizemore strolls over, looks at my paper, and very calmly goes:

“Tyler… it goes across. Not down.”

Y’all.

THE SCANTRON WAS IN COLUMNS.
EVERY SIX QUESTIONS.
HORIZONTAL.

Meanwhile, I’m over here trying to go top-to-bottom like every test I’ve ever taken in my entire life.

But you gonna know as she walked away, she had to be thinking:

“This kid is fighting for his life using the scantron, he about to make me look bad bad.” 😂

And that stuck with me like the tune of Tubthumping by Chumbawamba.

Because the stress wasn’t the content.
It wasn’t the questions.

It was the format.

Students already have enough crumbling their brain just trying to get the answers right…and sometimes these tests add extra friction before they can even do the real work.

Some kids don’t care.
Some kids care a lot.
And some kids care and still get tripped up by something small.

Keep helping them kids with the content, but make sure to get the reps so they feel comfortable just doing the thing.

Because sometimes the breakthrough isn’t content…

…sometimes it’s just the direction the bubbles go!
