Social Media is your Friend
There’s a lot of negative stuff on social media.
Loooooooots of peeps out there telling you to disconnect. They’re saying you should go full Nirvana Unplugged or you’ll start slurring your words like you’re a Nirvana song (unplugged).
Here’s the deal…
You know you.
If social is stressing you out, get off it.
Schedule limits or delete apps.
Whatever you gotta do to keep your peace.
Can I be honest?
I love social media.
It’s opened up a world where I get to learn and share thoughts with like-minded and not-so-like-minded people from around the planet, that I would have never met otherwise.
I understand the negatives, but that’s with everything. Literally, everything and everyone can be used for bad and/or for good.
Also, we all know too much of anything can be bad. In my first year teaching, students even got sick of Trashketball. TRASHKETBALL I SAY! That’s America’s game.
You gotta figure out your balance.
-
If you don’t like who you follow, unfollow them.
-
If you don’t like what people comment on your stuff, block them.
-
If you don’t like your community, find a new one.
Just like with in-person, you get to choose your digital world friends.
Be. Intentional.
We’ve all heard that phrase: You’re a combination of the 5 people you spend the most time with.
I think that can include the people’s content you consume on the Internet.
Find your people. Learn together. Have fun.
Cause social media is your friend, and if it isn’t, get new friends.
Never stop learning.
RESOURCE: Washington DC Fun Facts
I know most of my resources are pretty adaptable, but this one is a fun one I think could be a conversation starter for any class. (If not, promise I’ll bring something more else next week :)
A couple of years ago, I was given the opportunity to join the Apple Distinguished Educator fam (#ADE2019 #bestclassever). While waiting on my flight home from the event, I was given the chance to have a layover in Washington DC. Whilst there, I decided to ride a scooter around and make some DC fun fact videos.
If you live near anything historical, or just meaningful to your students/community, I recommend making some of these! Here’s a template to follow while you and/or your students are creating the videos!
