Parents Can Be Crazy
When youâre talking to parents, itâs easy to picture it as a equal conversation.
Itâs not.
Not that one person is better than the otherâŠnay.
But one is the leader. One of the two has to set the tone and control the convo. Even if the other one is angry or irritated or uninformed. You have to handle business like MJ in the 4th.
If they raise their voiceâŠ
You stay clam.
if they get accusatoryâŠ
Be patient with them.
They arenât in your class. Their narrative comes from whatever their kid brings home. Itâs like theyâre playing Marco Polo but you get to have your eyes open the whole time.
A few quick tips for Parent/Teacher Conferences:
Ask a lot of questions. Have them come to your conclusions. Ask how you can help better. Donât pretend to be perfect (even though you ARE pretty close). Let them feel heard.
Be very clear in their roles. A lot of parents want to be supportive, they just donât know how. Tell them where they can check in and what they can do to support the student.
Remind them youâre on the same team. I like to start out parent meetings (esp when they getting hype) with this phrase: âBefore we get started, I wanted to remind you that it is my job to help your child be as successful as possible. Is that what you want? (pause for answer) Excellent! Then weâre on the same team. Letâs figure this out together.â
You set the tone. You keep it calm. You keep it productive.
You got this.
P.S. If youâve got spreadsheets of all their childâs negative behaviors AND good behaviors, it settles most disagreements.

Are you filling anything out to prep for parents rolling into PT conferences?
I usually didnât.
Just had them the grades, answer questions, and hope for the best. That was my playbook.
I wish I had been more prepared. I wish Iâd have gotten the chance to hear from the parents on how I could be better. Tbh, it wouldâve helped me fast-forward my communication skills like iâm a VHS tape.
But I didnât.
But you can!

TRAINING OF THE WEEK: Enneagrams in Education
Have you ever seen someone act or interpret something in a way that was entirely foreign to you? Spouse? Boss? Co-worker? Student? EVERY Student?
Weâre all wired a liâl different. Iâll be honest, learning the enneagram helped me understand a lot of people around me. What makes them feel valued, and what frustrates them.
If you have some time, Iâd love for you to learn from my good friend Mark (and me) about how you as an educator can use the good ole enneagram to understand your students, principal, and even the crazy teacher down the hallway (you literally just thought of their name).
From this 3w2 to you, letâs do this.
